Executive Protection

Comprehensive executive protection details for C-suite executives, VIPs, and high-net-worth individuals in high-risk cities worldwide.

Need executive protection for your leadership team?

Executive protection goes beyond putting an operator next to a principal. It is a coordinated security plan that begins before departure and continues until the principal is safely back home.

The difference between presence and protection

Having someone who looks the part standing nearby is not executive protection. Actual protection requires threat intelligence, advance route planning, secure transport logistics, and a team that knows the local environment. The operator standing next to you is the visible layer of a much larger system.

Who needs executive protection

The most common clients are C-suite executives travelling to cities where their company or industry carries elevated risk. Oil and gas executives in West Africa, financial services leaders in Latin America, and technology executives in regions with intellectual property theft concerns.

High-net-worth individuals, family offices, and their representatives also use executive protection when travelling to cities where their wealth profile makes them a potential target for kidnapping or extortion.

How a detail operates

A standard executive protection detail in a high-risk city consists of a team leader (responsible for overall security planning), a close protection officer (nearest to the principal at all times), and a security driver. In elevated-threat environments, the team expands to include advance operatives and counter-surveillance.

Before arrival, the advance operative surveys every location on the principal’s itinerary. Meeting venues, restaurants, hotels, airports. They identify entry and exit points, emergency routes, and the nearest medical facilities.

During the assignment, the team maintains continuous communication. The close protection officer manages immediate proximity. The driver maintains vehicle readiness. The team leader coordinates with our operations centre, which monitors local threat feeds and intelligence sources.

The advance process

The difference between a reactive security arrangement and a professional executive protection detail is the advance process. Before the principal arrives anywhere, an advance operative surveys the location: entry and exit points, emergency routes, safe areas within the venue, and the nearest medical facility. The detail then operates in an environment that has been assessed, not one being evaluated in real time.

For multi-city itineraries, advance work may be conducted by separate operatives in each city, with the individual site briefs consolidated into a travel security document that covers the full programme. For a full account of what advance work involves, see our guide to advance work in close protection.

Threat intelligence

An executive protection programme includes an ongoing threat intelligence function, not just physical security. Open source monitoring of the principal’s name and organisation identifies escalating indicators before they become operational threats. For more on how threat intelligence integrates with close protection, see our threat intelligence guide. The underlying methodology used to translate threat data into a security posture is covered in our security risk assessment explained.

Integrating with corporate travel policy

An executive protection programme functions most effectively when it integrates with the organisation’s corporate travel policy rather than running in parallel to it. The travel policy should define which roles receive protection at which risk levels, what the approval process is for requested protection, and how protection arrangements interact with duty of care obligations under ISO 31030:2021.

Organisations with no defined integration between their travel security programme and their EP arrangements frequently create operational gaps: a principal who is protected during a city visit but not covered during the transfer between departure and the CP detail meeting them on arrival. Those gaps are addressable with written policy and coordination, not improvised communication on the day. A security provider who cannot support that integration conversation is not delivering a complete programme.

For the counter-surveillance methodology that supports elevated-threat executive protection, see our counter-surveillance guide for executives. For threat profiling and the intelligence cycle that underpins programme design, see our protective intelligence guide. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A bodyguard provides close personal protection. Executive protection is a broader service that includes threat assessment, advance planning, secure transport coordination, counter-surveillance, and contingency planning. Think of it as the complete security package rather than a single operator.

Yes. We regularly deploy details for board meetings, corporate retreats, and multi-principal assignments in high-risk cities. Team size scales with the number of principals and the local threat environment.
