Close Protection in Bogota
Planning travel to Bogota? Speak with a security consultant.
Bogota has transformed significantly over the past two decades, but the security risks that remain are specific, well-documented, and require professional management for corporate travellers.
The security landscape
Express kidnapping remains Bogota’s signature criminal threat. The paseo millonario typically involves victims being forced into vehicles and taken to multiple ATMs over several hours. Foreign nationals are disproportionately targeted, and the method of approach is often through unofficial taxis or after victims have been drugged with scopolamine.
Street robbery is common across the city, including in business and tourist areas. Armed assaults, phone snatching, and distraction theft all occur regularly. The use of scopolamine (a drug that renders victims compliant) makes accepting food or drinks from unfamiliar people genuinely dangerous.

Risk ratings and crime profile
OSAC rates Bogota as critical severity. the US State Department has this at Level 2. FCDO advises against essential (parts) (parts of the city).
The primary documented crime types in Bogota are express kidnapping, scopolamine drugging, street robbery, pickpocketing. FCDO warns about scopolamine (burundanga) used to drug victims. Applied via spiked drinks, handshakes with powder, or blown in face. Victims become compliant and are robbed. Express kidnapping: taken to ATMs to withdraw cash. Very common via fake taxi drivers.
The terrorism threat level is assessed as moderate. Operators and corporate visitors should be aware of soft-target attack risk at hotels, transport hubs, and crowded venues.
Kidnapping risk is rated high. Express kidnapping is the primary urban threat. Victims forced into taxis, driven to ATMs. Scopolamine may be used. Do not hail taxis on the street. Use only registered rideshare apps.
Ground transport
Traffic congestion extreme. Motorcycle-borne crime common. Do not display phones or valuables in vehicles.
El Dorado: use only pre-booked transfers or registered rideshare. Scams targeting arrivals common.
Registered rideshare apps (Uber, Didi, InDriver). Pre-vetted private drivers for corporate clients. Avoid street taxis completely.
Area guidance
Lower-risk zones for accommodation and meetings: Zona T/Zona Rosa - nightlife with security; Usaquen - upscale dining, relatively safe; Chapinero Alto - expat area.

Police and private security
Colombian police are better resourced than many Latin American counterparts. CAI (police stations) found in most neighborhoods. However, corruption exists. Tourist police operate in Candelaria and Zona Rosa.
Mature executive protection market due to decades of conflict. Many Colombian bodyguards have military special forces backgrounds. Armed escorts common and legal for licensed operators. Armored vehicles widely available.
